The Vatican embraces reality

VATICAN CITY – A Vatican cardinal said Thursday the faithful should listen to what secular modern science has to offer, warning that religion risks turning into “fundamentalism” if it ignores scientific reason.

Cardinal Paul Poupard, who heads the Pontifical Council for Culture, made the comments at a news conference on a Vatican project to help end the “mutual prejudice” between religion and science that has long bedeviled the Roman Catholic Church and is part of the evolution debate in the United States.

Egads – so I've read the whole thing, and it almost sounds like the Vatican is taking a reasonable position. Let science deal with the natural world, and let religion deal with the morality and ethics. It doesn't raise my opinion of the particular set of morality and ethics the Vatican preaches (or their recent history), but at least it shows that they're exercising some reality checks from time to time.
