IM surpasses e-mail in popularity

Instant messaging continues to grow as a medium for online communication, according to details of a study released by America Online on Thursday. Instant messaging is up 19 percent, and 38 percent of all users say they now send more IMs than e-mails.

Well duh.

Actually, it's a fair bit higher than that – at my old job, one of the things that bugged the hell out of me was the way people would use e-mail to “Instant Message” each other. IM is a sort of natural evolution of an e-mail system, and would be better suited to a lot of what people use e-mail for. (It's actually remarkable to me that there's no IM program targeted at businesses, in the way Outlook/Exchange is. Business opportunity anyone?
