Benford’s Law

This was a pretty neat item on BoingBoing about Benford’s Law a couple of days ago that I didn’t get a chance to mention here. Basically, it turns out that numbers are a lot more likely to start with the number 1 than any of the other 8 digits. Which is deeply counterintuitive to the way humans tend to think random numbers should work. I thought it was pretty fascinating, certainly something that was new to me that has some pretty broad applications (the original article BoingBoing linked to mentioned using it to catch fraud).
