Democrats suggest universal broadband access

CNS News (via Slashdot):

Pelosi also mentioned the Democrats’ “Innovation Agenda” to maintain America’s leadership role in the global economy.

America lags behind other countries that have universal broadband deployment, Pelosi said; but the Democrats’ agenda “guarantees” that every American will have affordable access to broadband within five years.

“We also believe that the nationwide deployment of high speed, always-on broadband and Internet and mobile communications will fuel the development of millions of new jobs in the United States,” Pelosi said.

This is uncharacteristically smart of the Democrats, presuming that they’re serious and can actually implement it.

For years now, Republican have dominated the information landscape. There was only one radio channel in rural America, and it carried Rush Limbaugh. The few other media channels weren’t friendly to the Democrats either. But – get a broadband pipe into rural homes, and suddenly they’re exposed to the infinite channel universe, and the Democrats finally have some bandwidth by which rural America can be reached. It won’t change overnight, but at least they’ll finally get an equal chance to have their views heard. It may be hard to get anything other than Limbaugh on the radio, but its just as easy to go to a liberal blog as a conservative one.
