Why is it okay to show man boobs?

BoingBoing has an excellent opinion peice up:

I usually don’t send out pure opinion pieces, but let it be said: There is not one person anywhere who can give you a good reason why it’s OK to show a man’s chest on TV, but not a woman’s chest. You can ask over 100 people why — trust me, I have — and not get a real answer. It’s just a silly superstition that some people came up with, a bunch of others went along with it, and now we’re stuck with it. Have you ever heard a real reason?

Well, I certainly haven’t ever heard a good reason. It’s always struck me as the pinnacle of absurdity, with the Janet Jackson incident being the case in point: It was a blurry quarter second slip in the middle of a violent sporting event featuring no less than twenty separate advertisements for alcoholic beverages. Yeah, those priorities make sense.

Just look at how dishonest the typical arguments against it are. Usually you hear something with the phrase “family friendly” – what the heck does that mean, anyway? To me, whenever the phrase is invoked I hear it as a code word for religiously driven censorship and gross abridgements of our liberties and free speech

A boob has never hurt anyone, and I can’t conceive of how it could, let alone just by seeing one. The author is absolutely right, it speaks to a deficit of critical thinking and rationality among the public at large, who accept these knee jerk reactions at face value. It’s a sad statement of our society and culture that there’s not widespread condemnation of this idiocy, let alone the fact that most people passively accept it with hardly a second thought.
